Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin), leader of the Sammilito Parishad which bagged all the 27 posts in Sunday's election to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said Monday his first priority will be to protect the interests of the members of the association. Talking to the Financial Express (FE), he said his team will try to revive the image of the country's ready-made garment (RMG) industry by establishing a congenial relation between the owners and the workers. "I want to uphold the image of the garment manufacturers, and exporters and the country as well ensuring a better business environment," he said. Mentioning that the country's RMG sector is running short of around 25 per cent skilled workers, Mohiuddin said they will try to address the issue. Referring to the country's existing infrastructure problems, he said the new board of directors of the BGMEA will urge the government to improve the existing infrastructures for the greater interest of the country's trade and economic development. Mohiuddin said the newly elected board of directors will urge the authorities to bring down the lending rates to single digit to help foster the growth of the country's RMG business. He said labour unrest takes place in RMG industry not only because of delayed payment of wages to workers, but the soaring prices of essential commodities are also responsible for it. "The prices of essentials have gone up abnormally in the local market. As a result, people belonging to the limited income group are under pressure," he said. He also suggested that the government should take necessary measures to enhance the capacity of Bangladesh missions abroad so that they can play a vital role in promoting the country's exports. Mohiuddin expressed his satisfaction over the performance of the country's young entrepreneurs, saying they are popularly known as the 'second generation' businessmen. "We have already produced many entrepreneurs, we need to nurture them," he added.
