Monday, 8 December 2014

Bangladesh Navy ship ‘BNS Samudra Joy’ has set sails for Maldives with emergency drinkable water and desalination plants. ‘Samudra Joy’ is carrying 0.1 million litres of safe drinking water and five mobile water desalination plants to the Maldives to help the Saarc country in recovering its extensive water crisis which led to a state of emergency after its capital Male ran out of drinking water. The navy vessel will cross 1,700 miles through the Indian Ocean and reach Male port on December 11, according to an ISPR release. The Maldives sole desalination plant – the Male Water and Sewerages Company (MWSC) – caught fire on Thursday and led to a severe water crisis in Male. Authorities called it ‘disaster situation’. Three days into the incident, a state of emergency was enforced throughout the Indian Ocean state of the Maldives after the capital ran out of water.
