Satkhira Nursing Institute students stage demo

Students of the Nursing Institute in Satkhira on Wednesday staged demonstrations demanding reduction in the meal charge and resignation of the officials on various charges. It was learnt that the Nursing Institute authorities recently increased the meal charge to Tk 1,000 from Tk 600. The students of the nursing institute registered their protest against the hike on Monday when the authorities allegedly threatened them with dire consequences. Instructor in-charge Manju Rani and housekeeper Kalyani Sarker confined the students to the TV room on Tuesday night in the name of searching their rooms for heaters. However, they ransacked the rooms of the students in the name of search while the students were not allowed even a single glass of water the whole night. The students started preparations to leave the institute on Wednesday morning when the TV room was unlocked. However, the authorities put the main gate of the institute under lock and key, barring the students from leaving the campus. Later, the agitated students brought out a procession on the campus protesting the incident, according to a news agency.
