Saudi aid will be used to import food, build houses

Bangladesh will spend nearly 98 per cent of US$100 million Saudi aid, provided as relief for the Sidr-hit victims, on import of food grains and construction of houses, sources said.
The ministry for food and disaster management submitted a plan on utilisation of the aid money at the recent advisory council meeting. As per the plan $67.50 million will be used for procurement of rice and wheat and $30.31 million for reconstruction of homes in the Sidr-affected 30 districts.
The ministry will spend $0.32 million on medicine, $ 1.28 million on clothes and $0.59 million on purchase of vehicles.
The Saudi assistance, according to the ministry, is almost 45 per cent of the total aid worth $222.24 million Bangladesh received from the different countries and donor agencies.
The ministry at the meeting also submitted an update of damage and losses caused by the cyclone.
