Save Agrabad's Ma-O-Shishu Hospital from water-logging
Tuesday, 21 June 2022
The rainy season has just set in, and we have already started to experience water-logging in many parts of Chattogram. Recently heavy rains along with high tide have caused water-logging in various parts of the port city. Whenever it rains, the city's Agrabad area goes under water and so does Chattogram Ma-O-Shishu Hospital (Child and Mother Hospital).
Since Agrabad is a low-lying area, rainwater goes inside it and floods the ground floor every time it rains. Sometimes, the floor goes under waist-deep water. This floor of the hospital houses emergency department, outpatient department, ENT (ear, nose and throat) department, child development centre, and 60-bed children's ward. Patients have to take treatment wading through dirty and salty water, which can worsen their health condition. Physicians and other staff of the hospital are finding it difficult to work in this water-logged situation for days.
Established in 1986, this hospital has been making a significant contribution to the field of child and maternal health services. At present, the hospital has 650 beds for mothers and children. But there is no end of suffering of the patients, who come here for treatment. Every year during monsoon, this hospital goes under water and there seems to be no remedy of it. And if this continues, there may come a time, when the authorities may have to close down this hospital for water-logging.
