Friday, 12 December 2014

A demonstration was staged in the city's Topkhana Road on Friday protesting the authorities’ decision to allow merchant ships and cargo vessels pass through different rivers and channels of the Sundarbans. The National Committee for the Protection of the Sundarbans staged the protest programmes in front of National Press Club. A human chain was also formed by them. Speakers at the human chain demanded proper and immediate steps to remove the oil spilled from a sunken tanker in Shelah River in Chandpai Range in Sundarbans east zone. They said black slick flowing down the Shela and Pashur rivers, covering grasses and plants on their banks, have endangered biodiversity of th world largest mangrove forest and seriously threatened its inhabitants, including animals and flora and fauna, according to a news agency.
