Saving water means saving the planet
Tuesday, 13 March 2018
THERE is a popular saying in Bangla which if translated in English means "as cheap as water". Therefore, a tendency to waste water has developed in our country over the centuries thinking that since water costs almost nothing we can use it mindlessly. It did not matter much until the environmentalists drew our attention to the impending crisis of water that the world is going to face soon. It is indeed disconcerting that since water is cheap it can be squandered in whatever way we like. We see water being wasted in urban households through leaks in water pipes and faulty taps. According to an estimate a water-efficient shower saves nearly 750 gallons of water a month. There can be hundred other examples of water wastage in hundred different ways. We must understand that at present we are living in a world where millions of people lack access to water and sanitation. We must wake up from our collective mindlessness and make judicious use of water, otherwise our future generation will have lesser access to water and therefore will be denied of multiple health benefits.
