Wednesday, 17 September 2014

The Supreme Court on Wednesday morning will deliver its judgment on an appeal by war crimes convict Maulana Delawar Hossain Sayedee against his death sentence. The five-member judge's panel of the apex court led-by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain will deliver the verdict. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have been put on ‘high alert’ across the country to control any untoward incident centering the verdict to be delivered today over the appeal by Delawar Hossain Sayedee, also a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami. Surveillance by the law enforcers has been increased since Tuesday morning in different districts and cities including Dhaka. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have also been deployed in 11 districts while they have been kept ‘standby’ as part of security measures taken for the capital ahead of the judgment. However, BGB started their duties from Wednesday dawn to maintain law-and-order ahead of the SC verdict besides regular forces including police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). They have been patrolling the streets of cities and towns in 11 districts – Chittagong, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet, Feni, Bogra, Gaibandha, Jhenaidah, Noakhali, Faridpur and Laxmipur – since Wednesday morning, according to private TV channels.
