Sayedee, associates looted shops in '71: witness

A witness in the case against Jama'at-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee Sunday alleged that he had committed several gruesome crimes against humanity like killing, looting and arson in Pararhat area of Pirojpur district during the War of Liberation, reports BSS.
M Mustafa Howlader, the eighth witness, said Sayedee alias Delwar Sikder along with his associates received the Pakistan army on May 7, 1971 in Pararhat bazar.
"The same day, Sayedee and his followers with the help of the army looted at least 35 houses and shops at Pararhat bazar in Pirojpur, which were owned mainly by members of the Hindu community and supporters of Awami League," he said.
"The following day, Sayedee and his associates set fire to the houses of Manik Pasari, Nazrul Islam Khan, Raisuddin Pasari and Shaheed Uddin Pasari," Howlader said in his deposition.
The depositions as well as the cross-examinations of the witnesses are being recorded before the three-member International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) headed by Justice Nizamul Haque.
Sayedee is the first accused, whose trial is being staged by recording the depositions and the cross-examinations of the witnesses for committing crimes against humanity during War of Liberation.
Mr Howlader, the eighth witness in the case, also stated that he had witnessed the actions of Sayedee, as in 1971 he worked as a small vender in Pararhat bazar. After completion of deposition he identified Sayedee in the accused dock.
The proceedings of the tribunal will start again today (Monday) morning. Sayedee was arrested on June 29 last year. Recording of the depositions of the witnesses was initiated on December 7.
