Authorities have put war crimes convict Delwar Hossain Sayedee on gardening duties at Dhaka Central Jail-1 located in Kashimpur in Gazipur district. The Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Amir there is serving an 'imprisonment until death' sentence given for his crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh's independence struggles in 1971. Jailor Amzad Hossain Don said Sayedee was given the duty of gardening because he was physically weak. He said that the Jamaat leader was suffering from backaches and cardiac instability. Sayedee cannot walk by himself, the jailor added. The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Feb 28 last year found the Jamaat leader, known as 'Deilya Razakar' in 1971, guilty of two counts of war crimes and handed down the death penalty. However, following Sayedee's appeal against that verdict, the Appellate Division reduced the war crimes convict's maximum penalty, according to bdnews24.com.
