Sayedee to remain in jail until death

The Supreme Court (SC) has reduced Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s death sentence to imprisonment until death. The Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain, delivered the ruling on Wednesday. Chief Justice Muzammel Hossain said the prominent Jamaat leader would have to remain imprisoned 'for the rest of his natural life'. Sayedee was sentenced to death for two counts of crimes against humanity by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on February 28, 2013. The full bench, headed by the JC, reduced Sayedee's death sentence to ‘imprisonment till death’ on Wednesday morning. Sayedee was found guilty of crimes against humanity during the Bangladesh's independence struggles in 1971. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, Additional Attorneys General Murad Reza and Md Mamtaz Uddin Fakir on behalf of the state were present in the court today while defence counsels Khandker Mahbub Hossain and SM Shahjahan were also present during deliverance of the verdict, according to private TV channels.
