Sayeed Iskander passes away in NY

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's younger brother Maj (retd) Sayeed Iskander passed away during treatment at Brookdale Hospital Medical Centre in New York Sunday. He was 59, reports UNB.
Khaleda Zia's press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan told the news agency that Sayeed Iskander had been suffering from lung cancer.
BNP MP Rehana Akhter Ranu said Sayeed Iskander, a former MP from Feni-1 constituency, breathed his last at 12 noon (New York time).
Sayeed Iskander, also the founding chairman of Islamic Television, is survived by wife, two sons, one daughter, one sister (Khaleda) and one brother (Shamim Iskander).
Sayeed Iskander joined the Bangladesh Army in 1974 and was promoted to Major in 1980. He retired in 1982 and then joined politics. He took care of BNP's overall election affairs in 2001.
Sayeed Iskander, a freedom fighter and Feni district BNP president, was an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Born in Dinajpur on January 13, 1953, Sayeed Iskander was general secretary of Chhatra League's Dinajpur district unit in 1969. He was later made vice-president of Chhatra League's central committee.
Meanwhile, Speaker M Abdul Hamid and Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali on Monday expressed deep shock at the death of former MP Maj (retd) Sayeed Iskander, reports UNB.
In his condolence message, the Speaker said, "The country has lost a prominent politician and social worker with the death of Sayeed Iskander. The vacuum created in the country's political field with his demise is irreparable."
Abdul Hamid said the people of the country will always remember, with due respect, Iskander's role in serving the country.
Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali, in his condolence message, said, "The people of the country will remember his sacrifice for the welfare of the country with due respect… the country has lost an experienced politician with his death."
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep shock at the death of Sayeed Iskander. "His premature death is an irreparable loss to the nationalist politics of Bangladesh," he said.
He also conveyed his deep sympathy to Sayeed Iskander's bereaved family members and prayed for salvation of the departed soul.
