SC affirms HC bail for Pankaj Devnath

Wednesday, 3 December 2008

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) Tuesday affirmed the High Court (HC) order that had granted bail for graft-convict Awami Swechchhasebak League leader Pankaj Devnath, dismissing the government petition for leave to appeal, reports UNB.
After hearing both the sides, a four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin passed the order.
On November 11, the HC granted bail for Swechchhasebak League general secretary Pankaj Devnath upon a pending appeal against the trial court sentence in a graft case.
On August 26 last year, a special court at the high security parliament building complex, which deals with high-profile corruption cases, sentenced Pankaj to 13 years imprisonment and his fugitive wife, Monika Devnath, to three years in prison for amassing wealth illegally.
The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against the couple for concealing information in their wealth statement submitted to the ACC as part of the purge launched by the interim regime against corruption.
