SC clears way for holding Jhenaidah-1 by-election

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday cleared the way for the Election Commission (EC) for holding the by-election to the Jhenaidah-1 constituency, which was scheduled to be held on June 5 this year.
The chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC has stayed for eight weeks a High Court order that on May 6 halted the election process for 21 days.
Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chamber judge of the Appellate Division, passed the order after holding hearing on two separate petitions- one filed by Nayeb Ali Joardar, an Awami League nominated candidate in the by-election, and another by the EC.
Lawyers Sk Md Morshed and BM Elias Kochi appeared in the hearing on behalf of Nayeb Ali while Md Khalequzzaman represented the EC.
