FE REPORT | Tuesday, 17 October 2023
The Supreme Court (SC) has upheld a High Court verdict that declared legal a gazette notification on the redrawing of the boundaries of Pirojpur-01 and 02 constituencies.
A six-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order on Monday, after hearing two petitions filed by writ petitioners against the HC verdict.
Earlier on September 03, the HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam declared the gazette notification legal.
The HC bench delivered the verdict after hearing the petitions filed by some residents of those constituencies challenging the legality of the gazette.
Later, the petitioners filed two appeal petitions with the Appellate Division against the HC verdict.
However, the Appellate Division heard the petitions and dismissed them.
Lawyers MK Rahman, Mustafizur Rahman Khan and Mohammad Sayed Ahmed Raza appeared in the hearing on behalf of the petitioners.
On the other hand, Murad Reza represented the EC.
The Election Commission in a gazette notification in June redrew the boundaries of 10 parliamentary seats, including Pirojpur-1 and 2 constituencies, ahead of the upcoming 12th general election.
The new gazette included Indurkani upazila in the Pirojpur-01 constituency. Earlier, it was under the Pirojpur-02 constituency.
