SC extends deadline for Mirza Alamgir\\\'s surrender

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday extended for six weeks its earlier order asking BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, now staying in the United States for treatment, to surrender before lower court in three cases. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order after the hearing on a petition filed on behalf of Fakhrul. Zainul Abedin and Sagir Hossain Leon appeared for Fakhrul while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state. Earlier on August 23, a petition was filed with the SC seeking extension by eight weeks its earlier order asking Mirza Fakhrul to surrender before lower court in three cases. The Appellate Division on July 13 upheld the High Court bail for six weeks to the BNP acting secretary general in three cases related to street violence, according to a news agency.
