SC order on Bar Council election May 28

Monday, 25 May 2015

The Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday fixed May 28 for issuing order on the appeals filed challenging a High Court (HC) order suspending Bar Council election for three months, reports BSS.
The AD bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha set the date with conclusion of the appeals hearing.
The HC division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Haq and Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman suspended the Bar Council polls for three months on May 21 upon two writ petitions filed by Dr Younus Ali Akand, a lawyer of the SC on May 17.
In the petitions, the SC lawyer raised question over the voters' list and the process of casting votes.
It also asked the government and Bar Council authorities to explain by four weeks as to why the polls schedule and the amendment to Bar Council Act, 2003, should not be declared illegal.
The concerned lawyers have said the scheduled election to lawyer regulatory body Bangladesh Bar Council will not be held on the scheduled date (May 27), as the HC suspension order is still valid.
