SC rejects Rangs' plea for halting demolition work
Thursday, 9 August 2007
The Supreme Court (SC) Wednesday summarily rejected Rangs Group's plea for halting Rajuk's ongoing demolition work of 22-storied Rangs Bhaban on old airport road in the capital, report UNB/bdnews24.com.
An Appellate Division bench of five judges led by Justice Md Fazlul Karim handed down the verdict at 9:20 am following an application moved by Rafique-ul Huq, counsel for the Rangs Group, as he preferred review of last Thursday's Supreme Court judgement.
The apex court had declared illegal the construction above sixth floor of the 22-storied Rangs Bhaban. The Rajuk authorities, after getting the Supreme Court judgement, started demolishing the unlawful Rangs Bhaban from Friday morning.
Meanwhile, a young demolition worker, employed by Rajuk, died after he fell down from the 13th floor of the much-talked Rangs Bhaban Wednesday afternoon.
During Wednesday's hearing, Rangs counsel Rafiq-ul Huq said, "Rajuk had started demolishing the building before the verdict copy reached all concerned. Damage was done. It was as if Rajuk was celebrating the Appellate Division verdict."
The deceased worker was identified as Sohrab Hossain (20), son of Ismail Hossain. He was a resident of Taltala in the city's Agargaon area.
Tejgaon police quoting Rajuk officials from the spot said Sohrab accidentally fell down from the 13th floor of the building at about 2:45 pm when the demolition work of the 22-storey commercial building was underway. He died instantly.
