SC reviews killers death sentences Sunday

Friday, 22 January 2010

The analogous hearing on the fate-deciding review petitions filed by the five condemned killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman against Supreme Court reaffirmation of the death sentences will take place Sunday, reports UNB.
As chief state counsel Anisul Huq prayed for "expeditious disposal" of the case, the chamber court Thursday passed the order setting the date for hearings.
The five condemned killers are Lt Col (sacked) Syed Faruque Rahman, Lt Col (retd) Muhiuddin Ahmed (artillery), Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Maj (retd) Bazlul Huda and Maj (retd) AKM Mohiuddin (lancer).
Six other former army officers have been on the run abroad with the death sentence hanging overhead while another died in the meantime.
On November 19 last year, a five-member Appellate Division bench dismissed all the five appeals filed by the condemned ex-army officers, reaffirming the death sentences on the dozen military officers for the murder of independence-leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most members of his family on August 15, 1975.
