SC scraps HC order acquitting Nazmul Huda of graft charges

The Appellate Division on Monday scrapped a High Court order that had acquitted former communications minister and ex-BNP leader Barrister Nazmul Huda of graft charges filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC). A four-member Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order after disposing of the leave-to-appeal petition filed by the ACC, said ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam. Besides, the court issued a directive for rehearing the appeal filed by Nazmul Huda against the court order. ACC filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station on July 11, 2007, against Nazmul Huda on charge of amassing wealth illegally. On April 3, 2010, a judicial court sentenced Nazmul Huda to 12 years’ imprisonment and fined Tk10 million (Tk one crore), in default, to suffer, one year more rigorous imprisonment. Later, Huda filed a petition with the High Court challenging the verdict. Meanwhile, the HC acquitted Huda from the graft charges on August 18, 2010. Following the HC order, the ACC filed a leave-to-appeal petition with the Supreme Court, according to a news agency.
