FE REPORT | Thursday, 11 January 2024

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed till March 11 a High Court order that granted bail to expelled Jubo League leader Golam Kibria Shamim, popularly known as G K Shamim, in a case filed over amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 2.97 billion.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) challenging the HC order. The apex court's Chamber Judge also sent the ACC's petition to its full bench for further hearing of the matter on March 11.
In the petition, the ACC said that recording depositions from the witnesses of the case against G K Shamim is going on at the trial court and therefore, he should not be granted bail at this stage. Senior Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan argued for the ACC, while Senior Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque appeared for G K Shamim during the hearing.
On January 4, the HC granted bail to GK Shamim in the case.
The ACC filed the case against G K Shamim, a top government-listed contractor, and his mother on October 21, 2019 on charge of accumulating illegal wealth worth Tk 2.97 billion.
A charge sheet was submitted against the duo in the case to a Dhaka Court on January 17 in 2021. The court framed charge against them on October 18 in 2022.
Rapid Action Battalion members on September 20 of 2019 arrested Shamim and his seven bodyguards on charges of extortion and tender manipulation. A total of four cases were filed against him on charges of arms, drugs, money laundering and amassing wealth beyond known source income.
