SC stays HC bail to Sigma Huda, Barrister Helal
Wednesday, 19 December 2007
The Supreme Court stayed Tuesday High Court-granted bail to convicted prisoners Sigma Huda, wife of jailed former communications minister Nazmul Huda, and Barrister Mir Helal Uddin, son of jailed former state minister for civil aviation and tourism Mir Nasir, reports UNB.
Vacation Chamber Judge M Joynul Abedin, following separate government applications, passed the orders of stay.
The government moved the applications as it preferred leave to appeal against the High Court orders.
On December 13, responding to separate petitions, a High Court division bench granted bail to the two convicts who were tried and punished by a special court under the Emergency Power Rules.
This was the first instance of giving bail to any of the high-profile persons, including former rulers, being herded up and tried under the ongoing purge in the interim period against serious crime and corruption.
On August 27, the special court, trying the corruption suspects, sentenced Sigma Huda to three years imprisonment for aiding and abetting her husband in a graft case while her husband to seven years rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case.
Earlier, on July 4, another special court jailed Mir Helal for three years for aiding his father in protecting their property amassed 'illegally' while his father was sentenced to 13 years in jail in a graft case.
