SC stays HC order banning screening of Rana Plaza

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday stayed the six-month ban imposed on the screening of the movie ‘Rana Plaza’. The film is based on the true story of garment worker Reshma Begum’s rescue from the rubble of the multi-storey commercial complex in Savar town near Dhaka that housed five ready-made garment factories when it collapsed about 2-and-half years ago. Reshma Begum had miraculously survived under the debris of the nine-storey Rana Plaza building for 17 days after it caved in on April 24, 2013. On September 6, 2015, a four-member appeals bench, led by Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, cleared the movie for screening after resolving plea by producer Shamima Akhter. On August 24, a High Court bench had banned the film’s screening and broadcast following a plea by the Bangladesh National Garment Workers League chief Sirajul Islam. It had also stayed the censor board’s clearance of the movie, according to bdnews24.com.
