SC turns down govt plea against Hasina

Wednesday, 15 August 2007

The Supreme Court (SC) Tuesday fixed August 16 (Thursday) as the date for the appeal-admissibility hearing preferred by the state to overturn the High Court orders, that granted bail to Awami League president Sheikh Hasina in an extortion case and stayed the ACC notice that asked her to submit wealth statement, reports UNB.
Fixing the date, the apex court refused to serve any stay order on both the High Court orders despite insistence by Fida M Kamal, the top government law officer.
As a result, the HC bail, granted to Hasina, and the stay order on the ACC notice asking her to submit her wealth statement remain valid until the government's leave-to-appeal petitions are settled.
Following the High Court orders upon Hasina's two writ petitions, the government decided to file the applications for leave-to-appeal.
Before fixing the date, a six-member full court of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice M Ruhul Amin, asked the state to file regular leave-to-appeal petitions by today (Wednesday).
Besides, the Supreme Court hierarchy extended its stay order by two days on the operation of another HC order granting former premier Sheikh Hasina bail in another extortion case filed by a power-company boss Azam J Chowdhury.
