Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (SCF) demanded an increase in allocation for education and research of Dhaka University (DU) as research and innovation, they said, are the key task of a university.
The left-leaning student organisation, loyal to Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), also urged the university authority to stop charging all sorts of increased and newly-imposed fees including semester and department development charges.
The SCF placed the demands at a reception to the first-year students of DU at the TSC auditorium Wednesday.
The student body asked the university authority not to turn DU into a corporate house by introducing various evening courses in the name of enhancing internal earnings of the university.
"Education is one of the fundamental rights of people. The authority doesn't have any right to bar the poor but meritorious students from pursuing higher studies by increasing fees in phases at the university," SCF General Secretary Jonardan Dutta Nantu said.
