Saturday, 21 July 2007

CINCINNATI (United States), Jul 20 (AFP): Second-seeded Patty Schnyder booked her quarter-final berth at the 175,000-dollar WTA hardcourt tournament here Thursday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Dutch veteran Brenda Schultz-McCarthy.
Switzerland's Schnyder remained on course for a potential finals matchup with top-seeded Anna Chakvetadze of Russia, who advanced to the quarter-finals Wednesday.
Schnyder, the 2005 champion of this event and a semi-finalist last year, will meet seventh-seeded Akiko Morigami in the quarter-finals.
Ranked 16th in the world, Schnyder beat Morigami here in the 2005 final and is 3-0 lifetime against the Japanese player, having won in straight sets on each occasion.
Chakvetadze's quarter-final foe will be compatriot Elena Vesnina, who advanced Thursday with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Yuan Meng of China.
Making her first quarter-finals appearance since Strasbourg in May, Vesnina never has beaten Chakvetadze - the world No. 8 - in three previous meetings. Olga Govortsova of Belarus provided the upset of the day with a 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-1 victory over ninth seed Jill Craybas of the United States.
In her first quarter-finals appearance in a WTA event, the 18-year-old Govortsova will meet third-seeded Sania Mirza of India, who advanced Wednesday.
