Bangladesh Solar Energy Society (BSES) Sunday launched an awareness campaign in the city for schoolgirls on the proper utilization of renewable energy sources.
The BSES and Forum Brigade organised the day-long programme at Siddeswari Girls High School attended by students of Class IX. It also provided the participants practical training on the proper use of solar photovoltaic system and solar water heaters.
"We've taken the initiative to create dependency on renewable energy, including solar energy, which will help save power, gas and other non-renewable energy," president of BSES Dr Mohammad Ibrahim told the function.
He said people would have to adjust themselves to the use of renewable energy, as the next decade would be an era of renewable energy with the depletion of fossil fuels.
SM Farmanul Islam, director of company secretary of Infrastructure Development Company Ltd, said they have been working to bring efficiency in the solar energy use, without threatening climate change. "We've so far distributed 0.850 million solar panels in the remote villages lighting up peoples' lives in the areas," he said.
"Renewable energy is now lighting up thousands of villages in the country. It is one of the fastest growing industrial sectors and is creating many jobs in the country, particularly in the rural areas, he added.
