FE Report
The country is still out of highly contagious swine flu, a high-level government meeting was informed Wednesday ,according to reports from agencies.
Screening of incoming passengers started at Zia International Airport Wednesday.
Health and Family Minister Dr AFM Ruhul Huq chaired the meeting at his ministry conference room.
He asked all concerned to remain on high alert against infiltration of swine flu, which had claimed seven confirmed deaths in Mexico and one in the United States.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization(WHO) says the swine flu outbreak is moving closer to becoming a pandemic.
WHO flu chief Dr. Keiji Fukuda told reporters on Wednesday that developments in the disease are moving the agency closer to raising its pandemic alert to phase 5, indicating widespread human-to-human transmission.
He said the health body was monitoring the situation but was not yet ready to move the pandemic alert level up from its current level of 4, which means it is being passed among people.
The United States reported the first swine flu death outside of Mexico while, Germany and Austria confirmed cases of swine flu Wednesday becoming the third and fourth European countries hit by the disease.
Germany confirmed three swine flu cases and Austria one, while the number of confirmed cases rose to four in Spain and five in Britain.
