SC's ‘no’ to plea for halting HC verdict
Thursday, 25 June 2009
The Supreme Court (SC) Wednesday turned a deaf ear to a plea for staying the High Court (HC) judgment declaring Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, not Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of Bangladesh's Independence on March 26, 1971, reports UNB.
Former Air Force officer Hamidullah Khan of BNP, who opposed the writ petition challenging the validity of the latest controversial edition of history of the War of Liberation, sought to halt operation of the HC rulings, but all in vain.
As Khandker Mahbubuddin Ahmed, the counsel for Hamidullah Khan, moved the petition for staying the June 21 High Court judgment, as his client prefers leave to appeal. But the chamber court of Justice MA Aziz did not pay heed to the plea.
"The chamber court's 'no order' carries the High Court judgment in force," a senior lawyer said.
The court, however, asked the counsel to file a regular leave-to-appeal application against the High Court judgment after getting its certified copy. And it takes time to get the certified copy.
