CHATTOGRAM, May 22: The 600 MW second unit of the Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project is slated to commence commercial operations in June, as the unit is now undergoing a test run, which is expected to be complete this month.
The first unit of the plant began power generation in November last after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated it.
Project Director (PD) of the power plant Engineer Abul Kalam Azad said, "The second unit is currently undergoing a test run and it is expected to be complete this month. The unit will go into commercial operation in June."
According to sources, the Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) is implementing the power plant project. As the power plant has been built close to the sea, a14-metre high embankment above sea level was constructed to protect it from tidal surges and cyclones. The CPGCBL has also set up a jetty for the plant.
The Matarbari Power Plant Project involves the construction of a coal-fired power plant capable of generating 1,200 MW of power, along with associated facilities, in seven years. Funding for the project is provided by JICA.
Japan's Sumitomo, Toshiba, and IHI have collaborated as a consortium to execute the project, with POSCO E&C subcontracted to construct the major part of the plant. As part of its commitment to supporting the region's economy, POSCO E&C has engaged some 4,000 local workers on a daily basis, on average.
