Wednesday, 22 April 2009

BARISAL, Apr 21 (UNB): Security measures have been beefed up in the city following Monday's death threat to the staff members of UNICEF, WFO and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) from suspected militants.
Assistant Commissioner of Kotwali Model thana Hayatul Islam said cops were deployed in front of the local offices of the three international organisations. None was allowed to enter the offices without search.
"We are trying to find out the so-called JMB members who gave life threat through letters," he said, adding that vigilance was strengthened in the offices of all the international organisations in the city.
In the name of the militant outfit, JMB, separate letters were sent Monday with life threat to 50 officials and employees of the trio-UNICEF, WFO and IFRC.
In the letters the militants ordered the foreign officials and employees of the aid agencies to quit the country to avert such dire action.
Another report from Nilphamari adds: Regional commander of JMB Mashiur Rahman, arrested Sunday, was taken on a 7-day police remand Monday.
Police said they produced Mashiur before the court, seeking 10-day remand. After hearing, the court granted for seven days.
Officer-in-Charge of Jaldhaka police station Narendranath Sarker said on the first day of remand, Mashiur gave important information about his involvement in sending JMB CDs and letters to different government offices.
Police arrested the regional commander of JMB from remote Sonakhuli Char of Tista River in Dimla Upazila Sunday morning.
He was trying to reorganise the outlawed militant outfit in five districts of the greater Rangpur region, police said.
