CHITTAGONG, January 11: Authorities have beefed up security in the port city as they deployed over 300 extra forces of law enforcers to thwart any destructive activities following the arrest of Golam Azam.
DC (north) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Amena Begum said additional forces have been deployed on all strategic installations and some strongholds of Jama'at-e-Islami and their student front.
"We are fully alert and more than 300 police were deployed in addition to those engaged in normal duties following arrest of Golam Azam," deputy commissioner Amena Begum said.
Golam Azam, former Amir of Jama'at-e-Islam, was arrested and sent to jail this morning as he appeared before the International Crimes Tribunal formed for trial of those who committed crimes against humanity during the liberation war of 1971.
Duty officer of Kotwali thana said, apart from important installations, additional police forces have also been positioned at Chittagong Government College, Haji Mohsin Government College, Bahaddarhat, Bakolia, Didar Market, Anderkilla, Chamrar Gudam, EPZ gate, Baropole and Chandgaon areas in the city.
Meanwhile, some 20 pro-Jama'at activists brought out a procession at Prabartak Square at noon chanting slogans for release of Golam Azam and other Jama'at leaders now in jail.
Officer in charge of Panchlaish police station Md Ismail said, the procession lasted for less than two minutes at Prabartak Square and was proceeding towards Medical Hospital. But on arrival of the police they dispersed and entered the hospital compound.
