Security tightened for Thakurgaon Sadar UZ polls
Tuesday, 15 April 2014
Security has been beefed up in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila (UZ) so that people can vote peacefully in Wednesday’s polls. The vote in the upazila was postponed on March 30 following a stay order by the High Court. It was scheduled to be held on March 31 along with 73 other upazilas in the fifth phase. RAB and police have increased their patrols, and the army has set up camps near several polling centres. BNP-backed chairman candidate Taimur Rahman has alleged that his rival rival Awami League-backed candidate Arunangshu Dutta Titu were holding 20,000 fake ballot papers, an allegation denied by Titu. Taimur Rahman’s polling agent Mirza Faisal Amin also presented a list of 72 polling centres vulnerable to criminal attacks and vote rigging. The complaints have been submitted to the returning officer, he added, according to a news agency.
