Secy Showkat denies accumulating wealth

FE Report | Monday, 30 June 2014

Denying the allegation of illegal wealth accumulation, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry Secretary Dr Khondaker Showkat Hossain said Sunday that he did not have any substantial amount of opulence.
He claimed at a press conference that a section of people and media are intentionally spreading smear campaign against him in a bid to destroy his reputation and humiliate him.
Dr Hossain said: "I gave my testimony denying the allegation to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) when the commission interrogated me."
On April 22 last, the ACC filed three cases against Dr Hossain, who was formerly Secretary of the ministry of housing and public works, on charge of taking government plots through abuse of official power.
Commission's deputy director Jatan Kumar Roy filed the cases with city's Motijheel police station against the top bureaucrat.
Earlier, the ACC launched a probe against Dr Hossain on charge of taking allotment of three Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) plots in violation of RAJUK rules.
He took the plots for himself, his wife, and mother between 2000 and 2005 in Purbachal and Uttara projects, said the ACC officials.
As per the rules of the development agency for the capital, a husband and his wife cannot be the owners of its separate plots. But, Dr Hossain had taken three plots from government quota in his name and under the name of his wife, Dr Aysha Begum, and his mother.
