Seed distribution in 16 N-districts starts

RAJSHAHI, Dec 28 (BSS): Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) and the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) are distributing high yielding and hybrid seeds among the farmers under a comprehensive programme in 16 northern districts under Rajshahi division.
Officials said that top priority was given to cultivation of Boro, wheat and Potato to achieve self-sufficiency in the region during the current winter season.
Joint Director (seed marketing) of BADC Abdur Rouf Chowdhury said that 7,769 tonnes of Boro seeds, 4,009 tonnes of Potato seeds, 9,357 tonnes of Wheat seeds, 175 tonnes of Mustard, Groundnut, Soybean and Sunflower seeds, 190 tonnes of Pulses' seeds and 110 tonnes of vegetables' seeds were already distributed.
He said special care is being given for the preservation and maintenance of these seeds. "Seeds are being distributed on the basis of first-come first- served basis," he also said adding that all the 800 appointed dealers were brought under required training courses in phases on seed processing, preservation and marketing.
On the other hand, Chowdhury said, 97.14 tonnes of Boro and 584.78 tonnes of Potato foundation seeds were distributed among the contract growers in the northern region for producing quality seeds.
Joint Director (contract grower) of BADC Atiqur Rahman said the growers are being given necessary training, so that they could enhance the production of high yielding quality seeds.
The DAE has been giving training to the farmers for producing, collecting and preserving high quality seeds of Boro, Wheat, Mustard, Potato and Vegetables in the region.
Additional Director of Rajshahi Agriculture Extension Zone Abul Basher said that emphasis is being given on enhancing farmers' level seed production through using modern technologies. Necessary inputs are being supplied to the farmers to achieve the goal, he added.
DAE has set a target of producing 6.66 million (66.62 lakh) tonnes of Boro rice from 1.56 million hectares, 0.62 million tonnes of Wheat from 0.23 million hectares, 5.89 million tonnes of Potato from 0.33 million hectares, 1.85 million tonnes of Vegetables from 0.12 million hectares and 0.24 million tonnes of Mustard seeds from 0.24 million hectares in the region.
