Friday, 15 February 2008

FE Report
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has instructed its department concerned to investigate the seven pairs of counterfeit bank notes recently seized by members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
All the seven pairs of 500-taka denominations notes had the same serial numbers and passed the forgery detection machines.
"…Definitely, the seized notes are fake. We are examining ..," Salehuddin Ahmed, governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB) told the FE Thursday.
Recently the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized the notes and submitted to the central bank.
Replying to a question, BB governor said steps are underway to check recurrence of same incident.
"We want to say that those who are involved with such fraud and forgery should be brought to books instantly," governor said.
He expressed his disappointment, as many cases filed in connection to counterfeit currency have remained unresolved.
"We are pursuing the agencies concerned of the government to bring the culprits to book since long but the process is slow," he said and added some cases have already been specified for quick settlement.
According to statistics of central bank, last year 550 cases were filed relating to fake notes while 1392 cases were filed between 2004-2006 period.
When asked, he said: "We will see that innocent bearers of forged notes are not harassed."
Traders said fake notes have alarmingly flooded the city markets recently.
"It is really tough to verify which one is forged and which one not as the culprits are producing the bank notes almost like the original ones," Abdur Rahman, a vendor in the city's Rampura Bazar said.
Apart from bank notes, prize bond denominated Tk100 are also being counterfeited.
Recently two persons with prize bond of same number claimed prize money to the BB after the monthly lottery was held, sources said.
