Self-destructive politics
Saturday, 24 January 2015
It goes without saying that the country has been suffering immensely due to continued political unrest and violence. The ruling party is busy perpetuating its power and the opposition is too hell-bent to get it back. The pains and sufferings of the common people are going unnoticed. We see pictures of suffering people every day in the media. Our foreign development partners are urging us to settle for an amicable solution, but it seems to have no impact on the ruling party. We often complain that our image is not correctly projected in the outside world, but how can we expect to depict a positive image when we hardly work for it. I think the onus to end this stalemate lies with the ruling people and I believe if they come forward, the current political situation will be normal in no time.
The country's economy is limping, supply line has broken down and communication is seriously disrupted. The unrest must end now. Ready-made garments sector is badly hurt by the ongoing blockade and hartal and if urgent steps are not taken to end this fiasco, this sector will be in dire straits and will not be able to meet the deadlines set by the international buyers. It is high time we mobilised the common people to be united to compel both the ruling party and the opposition to come to terms with each other in whatever way they can and stop this mindless and self-destructive politics.
