Selling OMS groceries from fixed shops

Thursday, 30 November 2023

The prices of almost all essential commodities are still high, making it very difficult for the common people to meet their daily needs. And queues behind the TCB (Trading Corporation of Bangladesh) trucks are growing day by day. These trucks are mobile shops of the government's Open Market Sale programme that sell daily essentials in subsidised prices. And for many low- and middle-income families, it is the last resort. But buying essentials from these trucks is not an easy task. A large number of people, including women and the elderly, are often found waiting in long queues for these trucks. They have to wait several hours for buying the groceries and there may also be chaos and fight over buying them. Sometimes, they have to return home empty-handed after waiting hours in the queue.
More and more people crowding OMS outlets indicate that people's purchasing capacity has eroded. Moreover, the entire process of selling products through these outlets does not seem to be humane. So, we urge the authorities concerned to sell OMS products from fixed shops instead of mobile outlets or open trucks.
