Seminar on cyber crimes begins today

A three-day regional seminar on cyber crimes begins today (Monday) at a city hotel.
This was disclosed by NBK Tripura, Additional Inspector General of Police and National Programme Director of the Police Reform Programme at a press conference held at Police Headquarters Sunday.
The Bangladesh Police in cooperation with the Australian Federal Police is organising the seminar.
The seminar is being organised to foster regional cooperation in combating the cyber crime following its faster growth in developed nations.
The seminar will provide the participants an opportunity to become familiar with cyber crime combating issues and approaches, resourcing, cyber crime response and necessary legislation.
Furthermore, experts at the seminar will highlight on organisational setup, staffing, skill and training, infrastructure, operational procedures and future trends.
Experts from Australia, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Nepal will deliver key note papers on the fast growing cyber and technology related crimes.
Currently, Bangladesh has no penal procedures to combat the new hightech crimes ranging from financial scams, computer hacking and virus attacks to downloading child pornographic images.
Addressing the press conference, NBK Tripura said that the crime is on increase in the country and it has been termed as one of challenges for the law enforcing agencies.
"It is growing at a faster pace and we will have to be equipped ourselves to combat it," he added.
Referring to a recent virus attack on computers and subsequent huge economic losses in the region, he said that Bangladesh is expecting its own legislation to fight it by 2008.
Adviser of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Md Anwarul Iqbal will formally inaugurate the seminar while Home Secretary Md Abdul Karim, Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Douglas Foskett will also present at the seminar.
