The benchmark BSE Sensex shed nearly 170 points in the mid-session as caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve interest rate decision continued to weigh on sentiment, offsetting initial slight gains from data showing consumer inflation easing to the lowest on record. The consumer price inflation eased to 3.66 per cent in August from a revised 3.69 per cent a month ago, in line with forecasts. At 2.10 pm, the 30-share BSE index Sensex was 169.30 points or 0.65 per cent at 25,687.40 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was down 60.6 points or 0.77 per cent at 7,811.65. Top five Sensex gainers were NTPC (+1.71%), Sun Pharma (+1.03%), Maruti (+0.69%), HUL (+0.68%) and ITC (+0.45%), while the major losers were Tata Steel (-4.43%), VEDL (-3.61%), Tata Motors (-3.58%), Hindalco (-2.99%) and ^&T (-2.77%), according to a news agency.
