Leaders of the Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB) Monday demanded separate budgetary allocation for the private universities to boost the quality of higher education in the country. APUB President CM Shafi Sami made this demand at a pre-budget discussion on "Fiscal Measures in Next Budget to Promote Higher Education in Non-Government Sector" organised by the association at Jatiya Press Club in the city. The APUB leaders also demanded withdrawal of 15 per cent corporate tax and value added tax in the next budget from the private universities. Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) Vice Chancellor Prof Shamsul Haque said the private universities are playing significant role in higher education but they are not getting any support from the government. "The private varsities are run by trusts which are non-profit making and non-commercial entities but government asked them to pay corporate tax and VAT. This is unreasonable," he said. Among others, Vice Chancellor of International Islamic University Chittagong Prof Dr Muhammad Mahbub Ullah, BRAC University Registrar Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, addressed the function.
