Separate nat'l database on returnee women migrants demanded

FE REPORT | Thursday, 30 May 2024

Migrant rights activists have demanded separate national database on returnee women migrant workers for ensuring their sustainable social and economic reintegration.
They also suggested that the Wage Earners' Welfare Board provide financial supports for the children of women migrant workers born due to sexual abuses in the job destination countries. The rights activists placed the demands at discussion on Media Advocacy on Reintegration of Returnee Women Migrants at the National Press Club in the capital on Wednesday. The discussion was organised by Centre for Women and Children Studies (CWCS).
Prof Ishrat Shamim, president of CWCS, delivered welcome address while representatives from different rights organisations spoke.
They also recommended introducing a separate allowance for returnee women migrants under the safety net programme. Women migrants are contributing to the country's economy, but they are subjected to different forms of maltreatment while working abroad.
Congenial working environment should be ensured for them. At the same time, the government should focus on skill migration by utilising opportunities of world job market.
Advocate Farida Yeasmin, executive member of CWCS, presented keynote paper on Media Advocacy on Reintegration of Returnee Women Migrants.
