Separate policy on export from SME sector likely

FE Report | Wednesday, 25 February 2009

The Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Foundation will take an initiative to formulate a separate policy to help promote exports from the country's SME sector.

Acting Managing Director of the SME Foundation Momtaz Uddin Ahmed stated this Tuesday while addressing a roundtable on "Export Dynamism in SME: Challenges and Opportunities', which was organised jointly by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and the SME Foundation.

EPB Vice Chairman Md. Shahab Ullah and former adviser to the caretaker government and chairperson of Bangladesh Federation of Women Entrepreneurs Rokeya Afzal Rahman, among others, spoke on the occasion.

'The government is sincere about resolving the problems faced by the country's SME sector in exporting their products. The SME Foundation under the directive of the government has already started identifying the problems,' Dr. Momtaz said.

He also said if necessary, a separate policy will be formulated in this connection. He sought necessary support and cooperation from the local SME entrepreneurs.

EPB Vice Chairman Shahab Ullah in his speech stressed the need for building capacity of the country's SME entrepreneurs to help them cope with the growing global competition.

He also assured the local SME sector of providing the EPB's allout support.

The SME entrepreneurs, however, sought necessary support from the EPB and the SME Foundation in boosting the exports from the potential sector.
