Serve distressed humanity thru nursing profession: PM

Thursday, 9 April 2015

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina called upon the new generation on Wednesday to acquire higher specialised education on nursing and dedicate themselves to serving the distressed humanity, reports UNB.
Mentioning that there is a need for appointing more physicians and nurses in the country to meet their shortage, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today announced that the government would appoint 10,000 more nurses in the country for further development of the health sector.
"The government and I myself have high respect for the nursing profession, and we give importance to creating educated and trained nurses to ensure quality services at various hospitals," the PM made the appeal while addressing the inaugural function of the academic activities of newly-constructed Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Nursing College at Tetoibari under Kashimpur in Gazipur.
The PM mentioned that there is no reason for a Prime Minister to inaugurate a nursing institute. "I've been here just to demonstrate how much I respect this profession, and I hope the students would come out from this institute like 'Florence Nightingales'," she said.
Criticising the trend of a section of people of going abroad for medical treatment, the PM said: "They spend big amount of money on medical care there despite having world-class healthcare facilities in the country's modern hospitals."
As international standard medicare facilities are available at the Sheikh Fa-zilatunnesa Mujib Speciallised Hospital, Hasina said she herself would go there for treatment purpose when her doctors would advise her to go abroad.
She said the soft touches of the nurses help patients get well early when they are on hospital beds although doctors are giving them medicines.
Realising the importance of nurses, she said, her government changed the entire curricula of the nursing education and created the opportunity of higher education like Master's and PhD degrees for them.
The PM said her government has taken various steps to create qualified and efficient nurses who would be able to work at home and abroad availing themselves of job facility.
