Session jam at BUET

Friday, 28 February 2014

The country's prestigious and highest seat of engineering studies BUET has fallen sick and is encumbered by backlog of a year in its academic curriculum. The principal reason behind this session jam is the prolonged teachers' strike in April-May 2012 demanding resignation of the pro- VC and the VC. The striking teachers even integrated students to join them in realising their demand. Political turmoil, countrywide blockade and hartal programmes, violence during the second half of 2013 contributed to further worsening of the situation. Students are now going to lose a year from their life.
BUET authorities do not seem to be unconcerned. There is no sign of taking any action for making up the loss. All the educational institutions of the country including the private universities underwent similar losses resulting from the prolonged political restlessness. But they have been recovering the losses by taking extra classes on holidays and weekends. Even many public universities, Dhaka University in particular are putting efforts to recover from the session jam.
Almost all teachers of BUET take classes in private universities simply for monetary gains. Even when they refrained from teaching their own students in BUET in the name of strike, they used to render services to the private universities. On holidays and weekends, they are taking compensatory classes in private institutions. It looks they have no prick of conscience to deprive their own students in BUET. Students stood beside their teachers in support of their demands while they were on strike. Shouldn't the teachers return the compliments?
We want the BUET authorities and the education ministry to take appropriate measures to get our children out of the session jam.
