Setting up of boundary pillars on Turag banks begins

The government has started setting up boundary pillars on the banks of the Turag to protect the river from the land grabbers. Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan Tuesday formally inaugurated the setting up of boundary pillars near Kamarpara Bridge under the Tk 990 million project which included pillars on the banks of the river, guide dam and walkway, said a press release. The minister said, "The government is working on recovering space for the river from the land grabbers to ensure its navigability. For this reason the government is conducting drives to evict illegal establishments from the banks of rivers and setting up boundary pillars and planning to buy dredgers." "The government has taken a master plan worth Tk 110 billion for river excavation. We are going to add 10 more dredgers to the fleet of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA)." He added, "Among these, three will be available in the next month and seven dredgers will be brought from abroad. Besides, we are encouraging the private sector to come forward for river dredging." Minister for Land Rezaul Karim Hira, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Abdul Mannan Khan, State Minister for Law Kamrul Islam, members of Parliament Sanjida Khanam and Jahid Ahsan Russell, Secretary for Shipping Ministry Abdul Mannan Howlader, BIWTA Chairman Md Abdul Malek Mia were present, among others, at the inauguration of setting up of boundary pillars on the banks of the Turag.
