Settle KEPZ problems amicably

Tuesday, 23 September 2014

It was surprising to learn that instead of solving problems and helping the Korean investors, the government is considering to cancel plots in the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ). The issue must be settled amicably without harming the interests of the foreign investors. Otherwise, new investors will lose their confidence to make fresh investment in our country.
We know how our system works and hope it will not hamper development of the country. If the plots of KEPZ are cancelled, it will be a bad precedent. The utility charges in the export processing zone should not be higher than those outside the EPZ. In the EPZ area, the investors have to pay much higher prices for water bill and such charges will surely dent the competitiveness of the industries which are situated there.
I hope, the government will sit with the Korean investors and solve the problems so that the units located there can start production and thus create employment opportunity for increased number of Bangladeshis.  If investors of the KEPZ start their operation successfully, then it will encourage many more foreign and local investors to invest in a big way in Bangladesh. This can change our economy for the better drastically.
