Seven trips to five offices to pay exam fees at JU

Despite progress in using digital services elsewhere, Jahangirnagar University (JU) still requires students to complete a lengthy manual process, entailing visits to at least five offices and up to seven trips to pay their final examination fees.
Under the existing system, the students first collect the examination form from their respective residential hall and submit the filled-in form to the respective department. The forms are then taken back to the hall offices. Subsequently, the students are required to visit the Accounts Section at the Registrar Building to determine the payable fees, before depositing the amount at a designated branch of Agrani Bank.
After payment, the students must return to the Accounts Office for verification and then proceed to the Controller of Examination's Office to finalise the procedure. The multi-step system results in repeated movements across offices, often taking a considerable time to complete.
The students allege that while admission applications and fee payments can be completed online within minutes, such a complex process for final examinations is unexpected. According to them, it not only wastes time but also creates unnecessary pressure during an important academic period.
Mursalin islam, a student of Law and Justice, said, "Such an outdated system in this era is truly disappointing. Sometimes it feels like paying the fee is more difficult than preparing for the exam."
Another student, Nazmus Sakib, said, "When admission fees can be paid online within minutes, it takes almost two or three days to move from one office to another. This is harassment."
Despite longstanding dissatisfaction among the students, no effective change has yet been visible. The continuation of such a multi-step process raises questions about administrative modernisation at the university.
Responding to the complaints, the university administration has acknowledged the issue and stated that initiatives have been taken to address it.
JU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Sohel Ahmed said, "A committee, led by the pro-VC (academic), has already been formed, and the IT Division has been included."
"Work on automation has already begun, and we expect to introduce a digital process for form fill-up and fees payment in the near future," he added.
