Several causes behind ‘Doel’ laptop’s failure to click

Several causes are behind the failure of the locally-assembled 'Doel' laptop to click in the market though it is maintaining quality, concerned officials said.
Lack of professional marketing people, ineffective strategies to compete with other brands and insufficient funds have offset the brand in the market.
As per government's initiative to provide people laptop at lower prices the state-owned Bangladesh Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS) under the Ministry of Post and Telecommuni cation (MoPT) took the initiative to assemble laptops locally.
Though initially the steps were good but soon after commercial production different obstacles cropped up which prevented the brand from growing in the market, said TSS managing director Md. Husnul Mahmud Khan.
He said, "Since production we could sell only 38,000 units of Doel laptop in four brands against order for 45,000 units."
He said, "Currently we are not getting enough orders. That's why production is slow and a huge amount of money is stuck in different banks as guarantee for the sold units."
The TSS managing director, also a MoPT high official, said, "We manufacture Doel laptop as per order and currently along with our four models we are working on a new model named Corei3."
He said the new model is of the latest international technology and the best quality.
Another TSS official said for marketing the Doel brand laptop a pool of skilled and trained person power are required but it is absent in the TSS.
He also said it is not possible by the government to go for massive production as it is requires professional people for marketing which is not available in this organisation.
"Though the Doel brands are of good quality, we are unable to fulfil the government's dream of providing laptop to the people at cheaper prices. It is very frustrating for us," the official said.
He said TSS did not pirate any software or hardware in the Doel brand. So its parts are of life-long but in the current market quality is not everything.
To make the brand popular the government still can take necessary measures to sharpen its production and marketing strategies, he said.
A Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) source said, "There is still hope with TSS. We are optimistic people would be able to get locally assembled quality laptops if rights remedial steps are taken."
He said but mismanagement, lack of funds and improper marketing strategy has prevented the brand from growing.
The BCS source said the TSS's Doel laptop is using genuine parts of different global brand companies and their laptops are free from the risk of attacking viruses.
He said if the government takes some measures then it may emerge as a popular the brand among the people for its quality and lower prices.
