Severe power crisis cripples businesses, city life in Barisal

BARISAL, Apr 7 (UNB): Frequent power outage, often for longer periods, is seriously hampering operations of industrial units and irrigation in the district.
Common people, specially the HSC examinees, businessmen, and city dwellers, have been suffering badly due to acute load-shedding and voltage fluctuations.
Abul Kalam Azad, superintending engineer of Barisal circle of West Zone Power Distribution Company, said Barisal division needs 110 megawatts (MW) of power during the peak hour.
Of the districts, Bhola needs 20 MW of electricity while it is generating 30 MW using natural gas of Shahbazpur gas field.
Patuakhali receives 10 MW of power from Bhola and 5 MW from national grid against the demand for 25 MW.
On the other hand, the rest four districts of the division, including Barisal, Jhalakathi, Barguna and Pirojpur, need 65 MW of electricity, of which 35-40 MW for only Barisal city.
